How to Find a Navistar Engine Serial Number
For Navistar engines, the serial number can be found stamped on a pad (flat machined surface) on the engine block. Engines that were built before the year 2000, that pad is located the left side of the engine block, just below the head to block parting line. Engines newer than the year 2000, the pad is located of the right side of the engine block, between the oil cooler and the top of the block.
For engines built after 1993, you will often need more than just the engine serial number to ensure you are ordering the correct parts. You may need the engine model, year, horsepower rating, and torque rating. These can be found on the emission label on the top of the rocker cover or intake manifold.
Engine Serial Number Format For Navistar Engines
Navistar engines use the following format for all engine serial numbers in the DT Series (mechanical and electronic variations):
The first three digits are used to indicate the engine model. Examples: “466” or “470H”
The letter after the engine model indicates the configuration. Examples: “B” = turbo JWAC, “D” = naturally aspirated, “G” = turbo air to air, “H” = HEUI (electro-hydraulic unit injection), and “T” = turbo engines.
The following letter and number are for the application. Examples: “A2” = service vehicl, “M2” = truck.
The following letter indicated the country. Example: “U,” = United States.
The last seven numbers indicate the unit number or serial number. This helps determine your parts for your Navistar engine if there are any serial number breaks.
